Check the format being used in a PDF file

Using a PDF Reader, inspect the document properties to see the file dimensions. If you’re using Adobe Acrobat to read PDF files, choose File > Properties and click on the Description tab to view the format of the document. You can see the format of the page under Page Size.

Formatting Files for PDF Import

In a nutshell, the process is taking a raw Adobe file, exporting it as a PDF and then importing it into our editor, where you can then make changes to the separate elements and set it up for your members to use.

Adobe InDesign and Illustrator are the most compatible file formats to upload to the Desygner Editor. Photoshop files can be used also, but are not recommended due to the number of effects available on this software which can potentially complicate the uploading process.

Before exporting your INDD or AI file to a PDF, please verify that your file does not include the following elements:

  • Outlined text - If you include outlined text within the INDD or AI file, then the Editor will read the text as an image. The next needs to be transformed into normal text before being exported if it is to be edited on Desygner
  • Different file formats linked in original raw file - Sometimes graphic designers will link different formatted files within the original INDD or Ai document e.g. an AI illustration or logo within the raw INDD file. Linked files with the original file should be formatted in either PNG or JPG and not SVG, ESP or AI.
  • Flattened layers - Before exporting your raw file, please do not flatten the layers. If the layers are flattened, then the Desygner Editor will read the image as one image and it will not detect the separate elements on the page (e.g. logo, images, text etc). If the layers are separated before you export the file as a PDF, then the Editor will pick up on the separate elements and make them editable.
  • Spacing at Zero - Before exporting your INDD or Ai file to PDF, please make sure that your spacing is set to zero. If you do not this, the letters may overlap or have an uneven spacing. If you are not sure how to do this, please refer to this video: https://www.loom.com/share/f34ed8b5b6834097920f282a2f9e06cb

If you have checked that these points are not included in your INDD or AI raw file, exported it as a PDF and are still experiencing issues uploading it to our Editor, please file a report with our helpdesk vip@desygner.com
